MailBox: Your Questions Answered

Thanks to all readers for writing to us. In this issue, we have selected questions that address common concerns for job seekers. Special thanks to Rosalyn White, Terri Carlton, and Henry Bishop, for allowing us to feature your questions in this issue of the HJS Telecommuter.

Work Experience

Rosalyn White, Arizona: Hello, I am retired but I would like to work out of the home. My problem is that I don't have any experience. I do volunteer at my grandsons school and I've helped with food drives for a local charity. I'd like to work but I'm probably not qualified for this.

HJS: Don't let a lack of experience keep you down. Many applicants fear that their work experience isn't good enough and shy away from a number of jobs. This is unfortunate since most of us have more experience and more opportunity than we realize. When considering a job that requires experience, consider too, the less traditional forms of experience that you already have or can obtain. Related volunteer work, independent studies, internships, and various roles in organizations are all legitimate forms of experience.

Familiarity

Terri Carlton: I have been working from home for about a year now but the job has ended. I am ready to start looking for work again but do some companies have a problem if someone has children in the home? They'll be in school most of the day anyway so it shouldn't be a problem.

HJS: Employers are naturally concerned with a candidate's home office. Do you have a quiet place to work? Internet access? Though these are valid concerns, this line of questioning can easily shift to personal questions about the Home in which you work. Do you have children? Are you married? Personal questions such as these do not belong in a job interview, and if asked by a prospective employer, a polite yet evasive answer should suffice just long enough for you to exit the conversation and forget you ever considered that job in the first place.

Pricing Your Work

Henry Bishop: Hi there, I saw some of the jobs asked for people to send their salary requirements. Should I ask for what I made at my last job or should I ask for more incase they try to talk me down? Sorry, I've never been asked that from any other job.

HJS: Some employers request that job seekers include salary requirements or pay rates, but this request can make job seekers very uneasy. An applicant may fear that quoting high will cost him the job, or that quoting low devalues his abilities and locks him into a lower paying job. While there's no one formula that is sure to deliver your desired results, if you're not sure how to answer this question, it’s best to provide a range rather than a number. Providing a range also indicates that you are willing to negotiate a fee that works for everyone.
