Member Success Story: Interview with Brigitta Schwarze

Brigitta Shwarze is an inspiration to all those that know her. She successfully manages her family and career, and has the unique opportunity to touch the lives of people from all over the world as an ESL teacher.

In the following interview, Brigitta shares her experience as a busy work-from-home mom, and her thoughtful, encouraging answers are much appreciated. (Thanks, Brigitta!)

HJS: Brigitta, why did you decide to start looking for work from home?

Brigitta: We lived overseas for a while and I became pregnant soon after getting married. When I looked into my baby's eyes for the first time, I knew I could not let other people raise her. I did not want to leave her in daycare and miss all her important milestones. However, full-time homemaking did not sit well with me either, so I began searching for work on the internet.

HJS: When did you join Homejobstop?

Brigitta: I joined about a year ago.

HJS: Were you able to find work?

Brigitta: I applied to various companies and got a reply from a remote web school offering English courses in France. Because my specialty is ESL (teaching English as a Second Language), they contacted me about three days after I had submitted my application and said that they would keep my name on file. About 3 months later, they called and hired me after an interview. I have worked for them since January of this year.

HJS: Can you describe your duties as an ESL teacher?

Brigitta: I teach English (English as a Second Language) to non-native speakers over the phone. The school has a call-back system where all international calls made from the US are charged as local calls. I teach about 7 30-minute classes a day and I enjoy every minute of it!

HJS: Many people assume that working from home is a cushy job, yet those of us that work from home know that it takes a great deal of discipline and commitment. What do you think is the greatest misconception about working from home?

Brigitta: When I tell friends that I work from home, they immediately think that I can work whenever I want. In my case this is not true because the classes are taught at set times. Also, 'flexible' work doesn’t mean less work. If you take two hours off in the afternoon to go to the park with your kids, you still have to make up for those 2 'lost' hours.

HJS: Like any job, working from home has its ups and downs. In your experience, what is the hardest thing about working from home and what do you do to overcome it?

Brigitta: Distractions! A good movie on TV or a great cooking show is hard for me to pass up. After my day of teaching is done, I still have to write daily reports of my classes. It is easy to procrastinate when you are at home. Then, needless to say, I end up with a mountain of reports to write.

I manage procrastination by dedicating an area of my home as my workspace, or office. Then I allow myself to leave this workspace *only* when my work is done.

HJS: Dedicating a work station is great advice. Putting the work and its challenges aside, what do you most enjoy about working from home?

Brigitta: I get to teach students from all over the world and I love the fact that people are impressed when I tell them that I teach students in Korea, France and Japan.

There are many other advantages as well. For one, I also don't have to pay other people to spend time with my daughter and I have never made more money teaching foreign students! When I was teaching in China, I only received 60% of what I am making today and I still had expenses to worry about!

HJS: That’s great! You make more money working from home plus you save on expenses! As a successful job seeker, you’ve probably learned a lot along the way. Based on your experience, do you have advice for fellow members and job seekers?

Brigitta: Yes. Don't give up! Your persistence and patience will pay off in the long run. Waiting may be the hardest part of your job hunting process. To make it easier, I felt that investing a little time and money in brushing up my skills to beef up my CV made the waiting easier.

Also, you can be optimistic about the kinds of jobs available. There’s a lot of more out-there than just standard clerical stuff. I never thought I would be teaching ESL again, especially from home. I was surprised at the jobs that came up on Homejobstop - many of them are impossible to find on Google.

Lastly, before accepting a job offer, I recommend checking with the Better Business Bureau to make sure the company lives up to its reputation. There’s plenty of great jobs out there and if you are committed to your job search, you will find them! ¤¤
